Workshop : “Safety in Healthcare with an Ageing Population” | 6 Dec 2015

It is our pleasure to inform you that Centre for Innovation in Medical Engineering (CIME) is organizing a workshop on “Safety in Healthcare with an Ageing Population” in collaboration with IEEE UM Student Branch.
The workshop got 5 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points by the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM).

ABSTRACT
The ageing population has led to new challenges in the manufacturing and safety of medical devices. This workshop will provide important insights into new safety considerations when developing devices for clinical use, with particular considerations for older people who are now the main consumers of healthcare services worldwide. User safety needs to be considered at the beginning of development of devices. This workshop will highlight particular areas to consider prior to the development process. It will touch on strategies and policies that could be put in place to prevent accidents and adverse consequences, as well as legal implications.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Professor Alan Murray is Professor of Cardiovascular Physics at the Newcastle University, in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. He is also the founder of the international research group “Cardiovascular Physics and Engineering”. He has published over 300 research papers, including in Nature and Lancet, and his primary areas of research are in the development of devices and measurement techniques of clinical value in cardiovascular medicine and surgery. He holds patents in blood pressure measurement and arterial measurement, and has experienced success in developing a novel blood pressure device which has been marketed internationally. He was the Editor of Clinical Physics & Physiological Measurement and Editor in Chief of Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing. He is currently Editor of Computing in Cardiology. He has co-authored a book on “Medical Devices: Use and Safety” which has also been published independently in India for the Asian market and has been translated into Mandarin Chinese.
