DescriptionAbstract:
Hydroxyapatite (HA) is widely used as scaffold in tissue engineering. It has high mechanical stress (Young’s modulus) and exhibits excellent biocompatibility since it has similarity with natural bone. However, this ceramic scaffold has limited applications due to its brittleness hence difficult to be shaped for implantation and cannot sustain the mechanical loading. This drawback can be overcome by combining HA with other materials. Among the candidates, starch has been heavily considered as a biomedical material due to low cost, wide availability, and total compostability without toxic residues to enhance and complement the properties of HA. Starch has been applied in tissue engineering scaffold due to its biodegradibility, biocompatibility and its appropriate mechanical strength. The mechanism of how nanoHA-local starches (e.g. Coleus Tuberosus and Mannihot Glaziovii) may improve their material properties will be studied. Another fundamental aspect which is novel here is to measure the dielectric permittivity of the local starches using our free space microwave measurement (FSMM) system.
