From new to old: How the transition from an academic environment to a real-world engineering environment can teach you

Event Description

IEEE Malaysia Antenna Propagation / Microwave Theory Technique / Electromagnetic Compatibility (AP/MTT/EMC) Joint Chapter under the ‘2022 IEEE AP-S Young Professional Ambassador Program’, in collaboration with the Faculty of Electronic Engineering Technology (FTKEN), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), IEEE UniMAP Student Branch, and IEEE UTM Student Branch would like to invite you to the AP/MTT/EMC Webinar Series 7/2022, as follows:

Date: 16 June 2022 (Thursday)

Time : 3.00 pm – 4.00 pm (MYT, GMT +8)

Speaker: Dr Heinrich Edgar Arnold Laue (Communications Engineer, Namibia Water Corporation Ltd)

Title: From new to old: How the transition from an academic environment to a real-world engineering environment can teach you value lessons about the broader aspects of the engineering profession.

Abstract:

Many engineers entering real-world engineering environments are disappointed when their day-to-day work entails little of the in-depth, technical design they were exposed to at university. In some countries, electronic and telecommunications technologies are mostly imported, with little being developed locally. However, in the absence of deep specialization, these environments may be the perfect place to learn about the broader aspects of the engineering profession. In this talk, we look at how adopting the correct mindset can help you learn the kind of real-world engineering skills that will serve you for a lifetime.

Biography:

Dr Laue received the B.Eng. (Electronic) and B.Eng.Hons. (Electronic) degrees, both with distinction, from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2015 and 2016, respectively. He received the Ph.D. (Engineering) degree from the same university in 2020 at the age of 28. His primary research interest being compressive

antenna arrays, he has publications in journals and magazines of the IEEE Signal Processing, Antennas and Propagation, and Microwave Theory and Techniques societies. He has also acted as peer reviewer for

several IEEE journal submissions.

In 2019, he returned to his home country of Namibia and joined Namibia Water Corporation Ltd as a communications engineer, where he is mainly responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of

telemetry systems, as well as the design of related SCADA systems. After barely two years in industry, he successfully registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of Namibia as well as

the Engineering Council of South Africa, the latter being a signatory to the Washington Accord.
