Title: 5G EMF assessment in Malaysia– Recent Development in Policy, Radiation Technology, and Measurement Methodology
The impending 5G roll-out in Malaysia will provide the public with better network throughput, coverage and reliability for new use cases. One of the reasons for the improvement in performance in 5G as compared to legacy technologies is the extensive use of beamforming in 5G. However, the same technology has raised concerns among citizens and government organizations about the effect of electromagnetic radiation on human health. The recently published Mandatory Standard and Technical Code on EMF provides the guideline to the operators on the requirement and method on the EMF assessment of the base stations. Especially in 5G, the EMF assessment is a prerequisite before the deployment, as to address any potential public concerns on the health effect that may be posed by the base stations.

Biography: Speaker 1
Nurul Huda Abd Rahman (M’15) received her M.Eng degree in electronics from University of Surrey, Guildford, United Kingdom in 2008 and Ph.D degree in electric, electronic and systems engineering from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2014. She joined Astronautic Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd. as a Spacecraft Engineer in 2008, where she was involved in various small-class satellite development and R&D projects. In 2014, she was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Universiti Teknologi MARA Malaysia (UiTM) and has been working in the same university until now. She also received a 2-year Postdoctoral Fellowship under the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia between 2018-2019. Her current research interests include antennas for space and terrestrial applications, array antennas, reflector and lens antennas, wearable and flexible antennas, RF and microwave design, and electromagnetic analysis. She is the Professional Engineer of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) since 2019. She has been appointed as the Executive Committee of the IEEE Malaysia AP/MTT/EMC Joint Chapter for 2021-2022. She was also the recipient of the Best Professional Paper Award IEEE Malaysia Comsoc & VTS Joint Chapter in 2018 and the Best Paper Award from IEEE Malaysia AP/MTT/EMC Joint Chapter in 2018 and 2019.
Biography: Speaker 2
Anwar Faizd Osman received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, United States in 2003, and M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 2015. His master’s thesis was on wideband Low Noise Amplifier design and he has published multiple technical papers on LNA, RF switches and RF filter designs.
His current role is as a Regional System and Application Engineer with a multinational firm, with expertise in the area of wireless testing for mobile operators and interference hunting.
Anwar has been a committee member of IEEE ED/MTT/SSC Penang Chapter since 2015, currently serving as the Chapter Auditor. He is also a former Deputy Chair of IEEE Microwave, Electron Devices and Solid-state symposium IMESS 2018.
Anwar was actively involved as part of the National 5G Taskforce Member, and he held the post of Chairman of the 5G Ecosystem and Timeline Sub-working Group, under the Spectrum Working Group of the task force. He led the study on 5G and FSS co-existence in the 5G taskforce, as well as one of the authors of the Taskforce 5G C-band report and 5G mmWave report.
