Aim and Scope:

The world of video games is one that is ever evolving and adapting to the latest in technology be it computer processing power or advances in graphic  processing units. However, video games is now undergoing a transformative evolution, propelled by the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). These innovations are reshaping the landscape of digital entertainment and education, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in creating immersive and engaging game or learning experiences.

In the realm of video games, ML and AI serve as the catalysts for enhanced gameplay, realism, and adaptability. Game developers are leveraging AI algorithms and ML models to craft dynamic and intelligent game worlds that respond to player actions, preferences, and skill levels. This convergence of AI/ML and video game development represents a paradigm shift, ushering in a new era of digital games. Similarly, ML and AI is poised to bring about significant transformations in educational experiences especially in integrating with the concept of serious games. The implementation of ML and AI algorithms can boost personalized learning by analysing learner data to create personalized learning paths, adapting content and pacing to individual learners needs and tailored to each learners’ strengths and weaknesses. Similar to video games, ML and AI can also be used to create adaptive gameplay experiences that adjust difficulty levels based on the learners’ skill and learning progress. However, as with any technological leap, certain challenges and considerations might arise. Ethical concerns regarding AI behaviour, player/learner data privacy and monetization must be addressed. Balancing AI-driven and data-centric gameplay with learning and entertainment aspects is an ongoing process, requiring a delicate fusion of pedagogy, game design principles and game technology. This special issue aims to address how can ML and AI be used effectively Video Game Development and the importance of these two enablers in creating a more engaging and immersive environment for players and learners.


This special issue invites research papers from the following topics (but not limited) to the use of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in Video Game Development:

  1. Exploring how AI/ML can be used to develop more immersive and dynamic game environments
  2. Investigating the integration of AI/ML algorithms and techniques into various aspects in video game development, including character behaviour, monsters/enemy patterns, procedural content generation, and adaptive gameplay mechanics.
  3. Exploring the use of AI/ML to personalize learning experiences in educational games, game-based learning applications and gamified systems to adapt content to individual learners.
  4. Case studies and best practices in the development of AI-powered educational games for various subjects and age groups.
  5. Ethical considerations in using AI/ML for entertainment or educational purposes and ensuring fair and inclusive playing or learning experiences.
  6. Promoting responsible AI/ML usage in the game development industry.
