Abstract: Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is one way to alleviate the spectrum scarcity at lower frequencies and provide high bandwidth communication channels. This talk provides history and fundamentals of mmWave communications. Two of our preliminary works will be presented. 1. Realistic beam-forming training (or beam-steering) in 60GHz millimeter-wave communications is formulated as a numerical optimization problem and optimal numerical search algorithm will be explained. 2. Nonlinearity is inevitable in 60GHz millimeter-wave communications due to RF power amplifiers of the enormous bandwidth operating in extremely high frequency, which, in collusion with frequency-selective propagations. This poses great challenges to signal detections. Particle filtering based detection algorithms will be explained to overcome this problem. The talk concludes with some highlights for future research directions.
