ABOUT THE TALK:
The rise of deep learning not only leads to a wave of breakthroughs in traditional AI areas, e.g., speech recognition and computer vision, but also opens up a number of possibilities that are unimaginable before — AI can now play chess games, perform cancer diagnosis, and even drive a car.
In this talk, I will share our efforts in developing an ultra-deep convolutional networks known as PolyNet, which adopts a new family of residual blocks called PolyInception. The model achieves state-of-the-art performance in the task of image classification. I will then discuss our recent work on hallucinating faces of unconstrained poses and with very low resolution. I will also introduce our ongoing effort in developing deep networks for other computer vision tasks.
The talk will also include new research and development directions in deep learning.
Loy is now a Research Assistant Professor in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also a visiting scholar of Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. He is the Co-Principal Investigator of two large-scale projects supported by Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF), namely “Deep Learning-based Face Recognition on Cloud Computing Platform” (2015-2017), and “Intelligent Video Analysis for Crowd Management” (2014-2015).
His research interests include computer vision and pattern recognition, with focus on face analysis, deep learning, and visual surveillance. He has published more than 70 papers, including over 40 publications in main journals (e.g. TPAMI, IJCV, PR) and top conferences (e.g. ICCV, CVPR, ECCV). His journal paper on image super-resolution was selected as the `Most Popular Article’ by IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence from March 2016 to August 2016. His current h-index is 31.
He serves as an Associate Editor of IET Computer Vision Journal and a Guest Editor of the Computer Vision and Image Understanding Special Issue on “Image and Video Understanding in Big Data”.
